Beginner Picks

New players lose more rounds to bad habits than to “wrong” characters. The Strongest Battlegrounds uses equal stats and skill-based combat: shared HP, M1 chains, wall combos after the fourth hit, and awakening with G. This page ranks easiest starts—not the absolute strongest kits—so you can build fundamentals before chasing S-tier exclusives or Cosmic form tech.

Rule one: one free character for a week

Pick a free unlock, stay on it for several sessions, and drill the shared layer from Getting Started and Controls. Character hopping every lobby resets muscle memory. When wall timing and block respect feel boring, open the PvP Meta Tier List and decide whether to stay or branch.

Best first pick: The Strongest Hero

The Strongest Hero (Saitama) is the default beginner recommendation. Routes are readable, awakening identity is clear, and the kit still sits in S tier for August 2026 when executed well. You are not “stuck on a weak starter”—you are learning the benchmark fighter. Deep kit notes: The Strongest Hero.

Practice order on Hero:

  1. Complete four-hit M1 strings without dropping the fourth.
  2. Forward, back, and side dashes on cooldown until mis-inputs stop.
  3. Fourth M1 near a wall → short delay → forward dash for the wall combo—see Wall Combo Guide.
  4. Fill meter, press G, and note what changes for ~45 seconds (Hero has special meter rules—do not assume a free full heal).
  5. Only then sample One-Shot Combos and Ultimate Combos for this kit alone.

Strong second picks (still free)

After Hero feels stable, these free kits teach complementary habits without Exclusive or Early Access gates:

Destructive Cyborg (Genos) — A tier learning curve

Explosive conversion fantasy that rewards linking skills after M1 setups. Slightly less forgiving than Hero if you mash, but excellent once you respect block and cooldowns. Page: Destructive Cyborg.

Blade Master (Atomic Samurai) — A tier punish focus

Sharp punish windows and wall-friendly routes. Great second main if you already understand neutral resets from Blocking and Defense. Overview: Blade Master.

Martial Artist (Suiryu) — A tier string discipline

Rewards clean strings and patient spacing. Ideal when you want to practice “do less, convert more” instead of gadget spam.

Tech Prodigy (Child Emperor) — A tier utility mindset

Stronger once you play 3v3 Elo and need teammate-friendly tools. Read Cosmic ranked notes on Cosmic Update and How to Play Ranked before you main Prodigy solely for gadgets.

Mobile and pressure seconds

Deadly Ninja (Sonic) and Brutal Demon (Metal Bat) sit in B tier for August 2026. They are fine after fundamentals, not as day-one mains. Ninja asks for tighter conversion timing; Demon asks for commitment that good blockers punish. Use them as challenge modes, not rescue picks.

Wild Psychic (Tatsumaki) is C tier in the current snapshot for average consistency. Skip as a first character unless you specifically love the fantasy and accept a steeper practice tax.

What beginners should not chase first

  • Sorcerer (Gojo) — PlayStation Plus exclusive path. Top-end tools if you have access; not a free grind goal. Rules: Exclusive Characters.
  • Undying Hero (Zombie Man) — Early Access, B-tier power discussion, gated unlock. Learn free kits first.
  • Admin / limited names (KJ, Crab Boss, Frozen Soul, and similar) — not beginner progression; treat as spectacle or lobby curiosities.
  • Character Creator mash-ups — Cosmic’s mix of base and ult moves is fun, but custom kits do not automatically inherit an S label. See Character Creator.

Beginner tier vs meta tier

Beginner Picks answers “what should I learn on?” The PvP Meta Tier List answers “what wins when both players are competent?” Hero appears on both lists for a reason. A and B free kits climb the meta list as your execution improves; exclusives stay labeled so free-player advice stays honest.

Seven-day starter plan

Day 1–2: Strongest Hero M1, dashes, block. Day 3: Wall combo until consistent. Day 4: Awakening with a plan. Day 5: One defensive session from Burst Guide if pileups appear. Day 6: Light ranked or focused 1v1 after How to Play Ranked. Day 7: Optional second free kit (Cyborg, Blade Master, Martial Artist, or Tech Prodigy)—one only.

Mindset

Equal stats mean letter grades measure tools and consistency, not HP. Your beginner pick succeeds when you stop gifting fourth hits near walls and stop holding block forever after your own string. Master Hero’s boring layer, then argue meta with evidence. Emotes and passes on Emotes and Game Passes can wait until your neutral stops leaking free rounds.
